Thailand is impacted by the trafficking of men, women and children for sexual and labour exploitation. It is a source, transit and destination country. Research suggests that historically, the cultural value placed on the virginity of girls contributed towards commercial sexual exploitation, with many girls and women entering the sex work industry for reasons such as losing their virginity prior to marriage (Skrobanek, 1986), or having been married and then separated (Thaipakdhi, 1973; Wongchai et al., 1988).
Global Family launched in Thailand in the northern area of Chiang Rai in 2016. Our focus is to work with tribal groups in this region (the golden triangle) to raise awareness and find local solutions to the issues of child exploitation and trafficking. Our girls' club curriculum has been translated into Thai (in addition to French, Spanish, Nepali and English) and builds communities of support for at-risk girls.
